A rent receipt is proof that you paid rent to your landlord for a stated period. Employers use it to verify House Rent Allowance (HRA) claims under Section 10(13A). A valid receipt typically includes tenant and landlord names, property address, rent amount (often in words), period covered, payment mode, and the landlord's signature.

Yes. Employers need proof of rent paid to grant House Rent Allowance exemption under Section 10(13A). Without signed receipts (and a valid rent agreement in most cases), HRA is typically taxed in full. HRA exemption applies only under the old tax regime.
If total rent paid in a financial year exceeds ₹1,00,000, you must report the landlord's PAN on Form 12BB (CBDT Circular 8/2013). If the landlord has no PAN, Form 60 with name and address is the usual fallback — confirm with your HR team.
For cash rent, Indian stamp rules require a revenue stamp on acknowledgments above ₹5,000. Each monthly cash receipt above that limit should carry a ₹1 stamp signed across by the landlord. Cheque, UPI and bank transfer generally do not need a stamp.
Many employers want one receipt per month for the full claim period (April–March). Some accept quarterly or annual consolidated receipts. Match the format your payroll team specifies on Form 12BB.
