About TDS
Tax Deducted at Source is withheld when payments cross section-specific thresholds. Without PAN, Section 206AA may force a higher rate (typically 20%). Form 15G/15H can request nil TDS on interest when eligible.
TDS on entire interest amount once threshold is crossed for the financial year.
Illustrative only. Verify thresholds, payer category and Form 26AS before deducting.
Last updated: 12 July 2026. Thresholds per Finance Act 2025 (effective 1 April 2025 for Section 194A).
What is TDS?
Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is tax withheld by the payer when making specified payments. The deductor remits TDS to the government; the payee receives credit when filing the income-tax return.
Common TDS sections
| Feature | 194A | 194I | 194J |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nature of payment | Interest (FD, RD, etc.) | Rent of land, building, plant | Professional / technical fees |
| Threshold | ₹50,000/yr (₹1L senior) from Apr 2025 | ₹2,40,000/yr rent | ₹30,000 per payment |
| Rate | 10% | 10% (building) / 2% (plant) | 10% (professional) / 2% (technical) |
Also covered: Section 192 (salary), 194C (contractors), 194-IA (property ≥ ₹50 lakh), Form 15G/15H on interest, and Section 206AA when PAN is not furnished.
Section 194A — interest
Banks and post offices deduct 10% TDS when aggregate interest from deposits with that deductor exceeds ₹50,000 in a financial year (₹1,00,000 for resident senior citizens, from 1 April 2025). Applies to FD, RD and similar interest.
Formula & worked example
When the payment crosses the section threshold: TDS = taxable amount × applicable rate (or the higher Section 206AA rate if PAN is not furnished). Below the threshold, TDS is nil for that section.
Example: Bank FD interest of ₹60,000 in FY 2025-26 for a non-senior with PAN. Threshold ₹50,000 is crossed, so TDS ≈ ₹60,000 × 10% = ₹6,000. Enter the same amount under 194A in the calculator to confirm.

Frequently asked questions about TDS
What changed in Section 194A from April 2025?
Budget 2025 raised the TDS threshold on interest to ₹50,000 per financial year (₹1,00,000 for resident senior citizens), up from ₹40,000 / ₹50,000 earlier.
Is TDS the final tax on interest income?
No. TDS is advance collection. You must include interest in your total income and pay additional tax or claim refund when filing your ITR.
When is TDS on rent deducted under 194I?
When an individual or HUF (not liable to tax audit) pays rent above ₹2,40,000 in a financial year to a resident landlord.
What is the 194J rate for consultants?
Professional services attract 10% TDS when a single payment exceeds ₹30,000. Specified technical services may attract 2% — verify nature of service.
Can I avoid TDS with Form 15G/15H?
Eligible taxpayers with income below taxable limits can submit Form 15G (non-senior) or 15H (senior) to banks and deductors to prevent TDS despite crossing thresholds.
How is salary TDS calculated?
Section 192 requires employers to estimate annual taxable salary (after exemptions and deductions) and deduct TDS monthly. This calculator spreads estimated annual tax evenly.
Does PAN affect TDS rate?
Yes. Toggle ‘PAN not furnished’ to apply Section 206AA — typically the higher of the section rate or 20% — on eligible payments.
What are Sections 194C and 194-IA?
194C covers contractor/sub-contractor payments (illustrative 1%/2% rates above threshold). 194-IA is 1% TDS by the buyer on immovable property consideration of ₹50 lakh or more (non-agricultural).
Is TDS applicable on PPF interest?
No. PPF interest is exempt. TDS under 194A applies to taxable interest from banks, post office (taxable schemes), company deposits, etc.
What is Form 26AS?
Annual tax credit statement showing TDS, TCS and advance tax. Reconcile TDS deducted with Form 26AS when filing your return.
Is this calculator for businesses?
It covers common sections for individuals. Companies, partnerships and audit-liable deductors may have different thresholds and rates.
Disclaimer: Rates and thresholds vary by payer type, PAN and DTAA. Reconcile with Form 26AS.
