About GST

What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax on supply of goods and services, effective from 1 July 2017. It subsumed many earlier taxes and is levied at point of supply with input tax credit mechanism for registered businesses.
How GST is calculated
Tax-exclusive price: GST amount = Taxable value × (GST% ÷ 100). Total = Taxable value + GST.
Tax-inclusive price: Taxable value = Total ÷ (1 + GST% ÷ 100). GST = Total − Taxable value.
Worked example: ₹10,000 + 18% GST → tax ₹1,800, invoice total ₹11,800. Reverse: ₹11,800 inclusive → base ₹10,000.
GST rate slabs (indicative)
The GST Council notifies rates by product/service category. Common presets here include 0%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Nil-rated and exempt supplies exist. Compensation cess can be added for applicable goods. Rates are subject to change — check current schedules.
CGST, SGST and IGST
Intra-state sales: GST splits equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). Inter-state sales: Integrated GST (IGST) applies. Choose supply type in the calculator to see the split; total GST is CGST+SGST or IGST at the same combined rate.

Frequently asked questions about GST
How do I calculate GST on an exclusive price?
Multiply the taxable value by the GST rate and divide by 100. Example: ₹10,000 at 18% → GST ₹1,800, total ₹11,800. Select 'Excl. GST' in the calculator.
How do I find the base amount from a GST-inclusive bill?
Divide the total by (1 + rate/100). Example: ₹1,180 inclusive at 18% → base ₹1,000, GST ₹180. Select 'Incl. GST' in the calculator.
What are the main GST rate slabs in India?
Common slabs are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Essential items may be exempt or taxed at lower rates; luxury and sin goods attract compensation cess. Rates are decided by the GST Council — verify current notifications on cbic.gov.in.
Is GST the same as VAT?
GST replaced many indirect taxes including VAT, excise and service tax from July 2017. It is a dual GST with central and state components (CGST+SGST intra-state, IGST inter-state).
Does this calculator include IGST, CGST and SGST split?
Yes. Choose intra-state to split GST equally into CGST and SGST, or inter-state for full IGST. Total GST is the same either way at the rate you enter.
What about compensation cess?
Certain luxury and demerit goods attract compensation cess on top of GST. Enter a cess % to see cess amount and the combined invoice total.
What is GSTIN?
Goods and Services Tax Identification Number — a 15-digit registration for businesses above threshold turnover. B2B invoices require valid GSTIN for input tax credit.
Can I claim input tax credit (ITC)?
Registered businesses can offset GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales, subject to conditions in the CGST Act. This calculator does not model ITC.
Is GST applicable on gold jewellery?
GST applies on gold jewellery making charges and on supply of gold at rates notified under GST law (verify current rate on CBIC portal). Metal rate pages on Nelstack show indicative bullion prices excluding GST.
What is reverse charge mechanism (RCM)?
In specified cases the recipient, not the supplier, pays GST. RCM does not change the arithmetic of rate × value but affects who files the return.
Is this calculator for businesses or consumers?
Both. Consumers can check tax on bills; businesses can quickly compute tax-exclusive or tax-inclusive amounts. Always verify HSN/SAC and rate notifications for compliance.
