About lumpsum investment
A lumpsum investment puts the entire amount into a mutual fund or other asset at once. Choose compounding frequency to match how you model returns; yearly is the common planning default.
Goal mode solves for how much you need to invest today to reach a target corpus at the assumed return.
Illustrative only. Actual NAV movement varies daily. Does not include fees or tax.
Last updated: 12 July 2026. Returns are assumptions only — actual mutual fund NAV varies daily.
What is a lumpsum investment?
A lumpsum investment deploys the entire amount into a mutual fund or other asset in one transaction. It is the opposite of spreading purchases through SIP. Investors use lumpsum when they receive a windfall, sell an asset, or want full market exposure immediately.
How lumpsum returns are calculated
Yearly: FV = P × (1 + r)n
For quarterly or monthly compounding, FV = P × (1 + r/m)m×n, where m is periods per year. P = principal invested today, r = expected annual return as a decimal, n = holding period in years.
Worked example: ₹1,00,000 at 12% yearly for 10 years → maturity ≈ ₹3,10,585 (gain ≈ ₹2,10,585).
Goal mode finds the lumpsum needed today for a target corpus. Inflation adjustment shows real purchasing power of the projected maturity.
Key considerations
Entry timing matters for lumpsum — investing just before a market correction can delay recovery. Some investors split large amounts across tranches (STP from liquid fund) to reduce timing anxiety.
Check minimum investment amount, lock-in (if any) and exit load in the scheme information document on the AMC or AMFI website.
Tax treatment
Capital gains on redemption follow equity/debt fund rules and holding period. Dividend taxation depends on current Income Tax Act provisions. This calculator does not compute tax.
Lumpsum vs SIP vs FD
| Feature | Lumpsum | SIP | Fixed deposit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Investment style | One-time deployment | Monthly instalments | One-time bank deposit |
| Return type | Market-linked (MF/equity) | Market-linked (MF/equity) | Fixed rate (contracted) |
| Risk | Higher timing risk | Averaged entry over time | Low credit risk (bank) |
| Liquidity | Redeem per fund rules | Redeem accumulated units | Premature withdrawal with penalty |

Who should use a lumpsum calculator?
Investors deciding how a one-time allocation might grow before committing, or comparing a mutual fund lumpsum projection against fixed deposit or PPF alternatives for the same horizon.
Frequently asked questions about lumpsum investing
How is lumpsum mutual fund return calculated?
Default yearly compounding uses FV = P × (1 + r)^n. You can also choose quarterly or monthly compounding: FV = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×years), where n is periods per year. Actual mutual fund returns follow NAV movement, not a smooth rate.
When should I choose lumpsum over SIP?
Lumpsum suits when you have a large amount ready to invest — bonus, property sale, or accumulated cash. SIP suits monthly cash flow. Neither guarantees better outcomes; market timing matters for lumpsum.
Is lumpsum investing riskier than SIP?
Both hold the same underlying market risk over the long term. Lumpsum exposes the full amount to market levels on day one. SIP spreads entry across months, which may reduce regret if markets fall shortly after investing.
What taxes apply on lumpsum mutual fund gains?
Tax depends on fund category (equity vs debt) and holding period. Short-term and long-term capital gains rules are in the Income Tax Act. Enter after-tax figures if you need net projections.
Does SEBI regulate lumpsum MF investments?
Yes. Mutual funds are SEBI-regulated. Fund houses must provide scheme documents, disclose portfolio and charge expense ratios.
Can I combine lumpsum and SIP?
Yes. Many investors make a lumpsum allocation and continue monthly SIPs for ongoing savings. Use both calculators to model each part.
What return should I assume for equity lumpsum?
Use a conservative illustrative rate. Equity markets are volatile; actual CAGR over your holding period may be higher or lower than the rate entered.
Lumpsum vs FD — which is safer?
FDs offer contracted returns and DICGC cover on bank deposits (up to limits). Mutual fund lumpsum values fluctuate with markets. Safety and return profiles differ materially.
Does this include expense ratio?
No. Fund expense ratios reduce net returns over time. Deduct approximately 0.5–2% from your assumed return for a rough net estimate, depending on the scheme.
How is lumpsum different from SWP?
Lumpsum is money going in. SWP is money coming out systematically from an existing corpus. They solve opposite cash-flow needs.
How does goal mode work?
Enter the target corpus, expected return, years and compounding frequency. The calculator solves for the lumpsum needed today: P = Goal ÷ (1 + r/n)^(n×years).
What does inflation adjustment show?
It converts projected maturity into today’s rupees using your inflation assumption, so you can judge real purchasing power of the future corpus.
